Knitted Braces Buyer's Guide
Knitted supports are designed to offer support and comfort to injured joints and body parts. They can be used following injury to aid the return to sport or activity or may be used to prevent injury by supporting parts of the body during sporting or other physical activities.
Therefore, the type and severity of your injury, or the potential damage that may be caused by your chosen activity, are critical to your choice of the correct support.
Our Buyer's Guide aims to help you to choose the best support for your needs.
At Physioroom we offer knitted braces for; Ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, shoulders, the arches of the feet and the lower back and Sacro iliac joint. Depending on the sport you play, different body parts may be susceptible to injury. Wearing a knitted brace will help support the joint from overuse or impact injuries by reinforcing the tendons and ligaments around that joint, whilst allowing unrestricted movement and moisture wicking technology.
Ankle Braces
The ankle is prone to ligament sprains in sports where changes of direction, uneven ground or jumping are involved. During such sports a knitted brace such as those from the Elite snug range or the Silistab Ankle brace can fit snugly into shoes and comfortably worn after such an injury. The risk of re-injury can also be high following an ankle sprain and individuals may continue to wear a knitted brace for added reassurance when returning to sport or demanding work activities until the muscles and ligaments have regained full strength and function. Knitted braces offer a less bulky option than some ankle supports making them ideal for everyday wear.
Elbow, Wrist and Hand braces
Sports that require repetitive movement of the elbow such as tennis and golf can cause injuries and strain to the tendons around the joint such as medial or lateral epicondylitis. Wearing a knitted brace will still allow unhampered movement when playing sport but provide support to the structures prone to injury. The Elite snug and Epitrain supports are ideal options that can be worn comfortably underneath clothing without being too bulky. Knitted support will aid sporting activity and also provide relief from stiff joints and pain associated with Osteoarthritis. Activities that involve repetitive movements of the wrist and hand can also benefit from supports that keep pain at bay. The Snug Wrist and Manumed Active wrist supports can help prevent injuries or provide relief to existing problems whilst carrying out daily activities such as typing, writing or sports that require gripping and overloading of the wrist.
Knee Braces
Knee supports may be particular useful for sports such as hockey or tennis where running with bent knees and changes of direction are required. Load on the knees can be reduced with open or closed patellar designs. For playing sport a light weight support such as the Snug knee support can be worn when walking and running to help increase stability and relieve pain caused by overuse or symptoms of Osteoarthritis. Elasticated bandages move with the body and can offer relief after knee injuries such as damage to the medial or lateral collateral ligaments, meniscus or cruciate ligaments. If pain is felt specifically at the knee cap an open-patellar support may be worn such as the Genutrain patellar knee brace to provide more specific relief to Chondromalacia Patellar or Patellar Femoral pain.
Shoulder Braces
Shoulder knitted braces can be worn at work or during sport activities, when demand on the Shoulder is high and injury could occur such as cricket, tennis and rugby. Designed to allow movement and comfort the Omotrain shoulder support can offer protection following Shoulder injuries or surgery in the mid to late stages of rehabilitation. The lightweight fabric allows movement but can offer peace of mind when returning to more functional activities or sport.
Foot Arch Brace
There are three arches of the foot that run along the inside (medial), outside (lateral) and across (transverse) the foot. Together the arches form the foundations of the body, much like a house, and if the foundations are not supported the rest of the body can compensate. The Elastic foot arch support can help provide support when the transverse arch has collapsed which can lead to foot pain, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, burning and tingling, reduced circulation, Morton’s Neuroma and other foot disorders. The lightweight material fits into the shoe without feeling bulky or uncomfortable to support the transverse arch, provide compression and restore a healthy foot posture.
Lower Back and Sacro Iliac Braces
The lower back and Sacro Iliac joints can be heavily strained during sporting activities and also work where heavy lifting, prolonged sitting or when excessive standing is required. Supporting the back with our Lumbomed basic silver support or the Sacro Iliac joint with the Lumbomed plus can allow day-long comfort from back pain or Sacro Iliac problems by preventing the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support the joints from being overworked. Following back injury or Sacro Iliac pain the braces may be used when re-integrating into sport to provide reassurance until the structures are strong enough to meet the demands of the activity.
Children’s Supports and Braces
At Physioroom we offer supports and braces also suitable for children who may sustain injuries or undergo surgery. Like our adult ranges our Children’s supports are designed to perform two important functions.
Supporting and stabilising painful joints and body parts following injury or surgery
Preventing injury by supporting parts of the body during sporting or other physical activities.
Therefore, the type and severity of your injury, or the potential damage that may be caused by your chosen activity, are critical to your choice of the correct support.
We offer a range of supports and braces designed to fit smaller limbs and to suit the needs of children who may suffer from injuries to ankles, knees, wrists, elbows, neck or back.
The support needed will depend on the area of injury, but the benefits of a removable brace include improved hygiene as the device can be removed and the body part washed. A support or brace can also enhance rehabilitation after an injury or fracture as a small degree of movement is allowed or it can be taken off to complete exercises under the supervision of a Chartered Physiotherapist. Following an injury parents may be worried about a child returning to school or activities in case of re-injury. A support can provide reassurance both for the child and parent when normal activities are resumed.
Our knee supports such as the Kid’s open knee brace can help ease painful symptoms of Osgood’s Schlatters disease that can affect children as they grow. Whereas the Kid’s Comfort Sponge sling can prove invaluable for the many bumps and falls experienced during childhood.
