Hamstring injuries and thigh muscle strains are common sports injuries that affect the hip and thigh. Muscle strains are often called ‘muscle pulls’ or ‘pulled muscles’ because of the way these injuries occur, with the muscle tissue forcibly stretched until it is torn. Depending on the number of muscle fibres that are torn, hamstring and thigh muscle strains are classified as first degree (least severe), second degree (moderate severity) and third degree (most severe) strains.
As with any sports injury, treatment with a sports medicine professional should be sought. Early muscle injury treatment with a physiotherapist can help to limit damage and allow a faster return to fitness. Hamstring injuries are notoriously prone to recurrence, so make sure that you follow the advice from a fully qualified sports injury expert.
