• Case Study: Anthony Ogogo’s Dislocated Shoulder

Have you had surgery for a dislocated shoulder? Find out how Anthony Ogogo is looking after this injury and what others with a dislocated shoulder should do to quicken the recovery process.

    The Injury

British boxer Anthony Ogogo missed out on an early opportunity to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics when he aggravated a long-term shoulder injury in a boxing match. After dislocating his shoulder Ogogo revealed he lost the range of mobility in his shoulder, a symptom which many who suffer a dislocation experience.

Speaking to PhysioRoom.com, he said: ‘I couldn’t punch with my right hand’.

Other tell-tale signs connected to dislocated shoulder are pain in the shoulder, loss of the shoulder’s usual rounded appearance and instead a squared off look, and sufferer’s supporting their arm against their chest.

    The Treatment

Shoulder dislocation is extremely painful and hospital treatment is advised to restore the shoulder’s structure. You may be prescribed ibuprofen to ease any swelling and treat the pain. Using a cold compress will also provide some relief.

Due to the severity of his injury Ogogo underwent surgery, but typically those who suffer a shoulder dislocation will need a medical professional to re-position (reduce) the shoulder before taking five to seven days of rest. Wearing a shoulder sling will help to keep the shoulder immobilised during this time and should be worn for two to three weeks.

Physiotherapy treatment after a period of rest will help to restore the stability of the shoulder by exercising the Rotator Cuff muscles. Once these are strengthened the range of a movement in the shoulder can be worked on. Exercising using resistance bands is extremely beneficial as it helps to safely increase the power and flexibility in the shoulder.

It’s not uncommon for those who suffer a shoulder dislocation to repeat the injury. The best preventative against this is to seek the assistance of a physio. Depending on the recurrence of the injury surgery may be the answer.

    The Outcome

Anthony Ogogo is well on the way to recovery and is continuing to exercise his shoulder with the help of his physios. Commenting on his current training program, he said: ‘My shoulder blade’s really uncomfortable but I feel I have my mobility back and my muscles have been strengthened.’

‘I’m on the way to recovery now!’
