• Kevin Stone Biography – Orthopaedic Surgeon

    Kevin R. Stone, M.D. is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and Chairman of The Stone Foundation for Sports Medicine and Arthritis Research at The Stone Clinic in San Francisco, California. The Foundation conducts research in advanced surgical techniques for orthopaedic sports medicine. These efforts have led to improvements in cartilage replacement and regeneration, cruciate ligament repair and reconstruction, and techniques to prevent osteoarthritic degeneration. He specializes in sports medicine with a special interest in knee and shoulder injuries. He has received the Albert Trillat Young Investigator Award from the International Society of the Knee, the Cabaud Memorial Award from the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Residents and Fellows Research Award from the Arthroscopy Association of North America and approximately fifty U.S. patents for his work since 1989. He has been the principle investigator in three NIH grants. He has lectured around the world as an expert in cartilage and meniscal growth, replacement, and repair.

    Dr. Stone is also the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of CrossCart Inc., a venture capital funded medical device xenotransplantation company and Founder and Chairman of Joint Juice, Inc., a San Francisco-based nutraceutical beverage company. CrossCart has developed a technique for removing the antigens from pig tissues so that they may be used in humans. The first xenograft device for reconstruction of ruptured cruciate ligaments (ACLs) has received FDA approval for human clinical trials. Joint Juice is the first beverage with a full day’s dose of glucosamine, proven to reduce pain, act as an anti-inflammatory, and aid in cartilage repair without side effects. Joint Juice has gained wide national distribution in its first year of launch.

    Dr. Stone is a physician for the Lawrence Pech Dance Company, The Marin Ballet and Smuin Ballet. He has served as a physician for the U.S. Ski Team, the U.S. Pro Ski Tour, the Old Blues Rugby Club, the modern pentathlon at the U.S. Olympic Festival, and for the United States Olympic Training Center. He was trained at Harvard in internal medicine and orthopaedic surgery and Stanford in general surgery. His fellowship was in cartilage research and in knee surgery. Dr. Stone enjoys windsurfing, biking, skiing, and running. He especially enjoys time with his wife and two daughters.
