Knee Braces for the Prevention and Treatment of Knee Ligament Injuries

Alan Shearer knee injuryKnee ligament injuries are very common during sports such as football (soccer), skiing and American football. Ninety percent of knee ligament injuries that require surgery involve the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL). The ACL lies deep within the knee joint, connecting the thigh bone with the shin bone, whilst the MCL is the large ligament on the inside of the knee that links the thigh bone and the shin bone.

Newcastle United's Alan Shearer suffered a Medial Collateral Ligament injury during his 2005/06 season and used a knee brace to help his recovery. Knee braces provide protection for injured knees, which reduces knee pain and helps the healing process.

Knee braces provide around 30% more resistance to forces applied to the knee ligaments during sporting activities and skiing. They offer extra support to previously injured knees and help prevent knee ligament injury and knee pain.

What are they?

knee braceA modern knee brace has many design features that make it more sophisticated than a traditional, basic neoprene knee support. Our knee brace range features metal hinges and flexible steel struts that are designed to increase the support and stability for the knee joint.

Our most advanced knee braces feature a ‘Triaxial' hinge that helps to reproduce normal knee movement, making the brace feel as natural as possible during everyday activities.

The metal hinges can be set at specified ranges of movement to help protect the knee. Our knee braces can be custom tightened using Velcro straps, which help to prevent unwanted movements that can cause pain in the knee.

Who uses them?

Knee Braces can also be used during rehabilitation and beyond, when an athlete returns to competition. Many NFL football players who have had knee ligament injuries use a knee brace to provide extra protection and reassurance.

When to use them

Knee braces are not just for elite level athletes. A knee brace is suitable to keep you in your game no matter what level you're competing at:
