Motion Control (MC) Walker is ideal following Achilles Tendon rupture surgery - allows adjustable range of ankle motion.
From the initial Achilles Tendon rupture until you are ready to start walking normally after Achilles Tendon repair surgery.
Based on UK shoe size.
Using a simple 'pin hinge' system the MC Walker can be immobilised at the neutral ankle position (where the foot is at 90degree to the shin), or 10 degrees, 20 degrees or 30 degrees each way (either toe up (dorsiflexion) or toe down (plantarflexion). In addition the MC Walker can provide protected range of ankle motion in 7.5 degree increments from 45 degrees of plantarflexion to 30 degrees of dorsiflexion.
Achilles Tendon ruptures used to be put in a plaster cast following surgical repair. This allowed the Achilles Tendon to heal, but left the ankle very stiff and the calf muscles extremely weak. The Donjoy MC Walker allows the orthopaedic surgeon to change the angle of the ankle joint to put gradually more stretch on the healing Achilles Tendon.
On resuming partial weight bearing, the Donjoy MC Walker allows safe walking while still providing protection. By gradually stretching the Achilles Tendon the outcome from surgery has been shown to be improved.

Excellent brace......beats having a cast 100%.

Back in 2000, I had a abdominal surgery during which my surgeon cut off the blood supply to my legs which resulted in compartment syndrome. (Don't ask me how he managed this because even the courts couldn't work out how!!!) The blood supply had been cut off for 72 hours before they diagnosed the problem by which time, the muscles and peripheral nerve was crushed beyond repair and I lost all but one of the muscles in my calf.
I was given one of these boots by the physio in the rehab centre and have basically been fobbed off with one ever since..in fact for 13 years now!!
Although it it reasonably comfortable, it is not practical. The open toe makes it impossible for the wearer to go out in the cold wet or snow. I cannot believe that a 'winter' closed toe boot has not be designed.
The other flaw is that the rubber, non slip sole does not come up high enough around the base of the boot making it dangerous if you put your foot down at a slight angle on a shiny or slippery floor!!
Anyway, long and short of it is, can you design something for more long term use please as some of us are stuck wearing these contraptions for longer than post op or for rehab purposes. Thank you.

I got a Donjoy MC Walker 8 years ago, after I spent way too long in a series of casts following Achilles Tendon repair surgery. I stayed in the boot, hinged from 0=neutral to many degrees toe down (plantar flexion), until I could walk normally barefoot or in shoes. Then I suffered a setback from too-aggressive physio (multiple one-legged heel raises on the first day when I could walk normally) and I went into the boot for a MONTH until I could again walk normally barefoot or in shoes.
Recently, I tore the OTHER AT, and I've been recovering nicely with the non-surgical protocol used in a randomized study at University of Western Ontario. They put me in a rigid AirCast boot, and now, 8 weeks later, I'm supposed to "wean off boot" into shoes and "return to crutches as necessary".
Fortunately, I saved my Donjoy MC Walker (yes, I'm a pack rat!), and I've been using it, hinged, since 7 weeks. And I expect to keep using it until I can walk normally barefoot or in shoes. It makes so much more sense to me than doing a frightened "silly walk" in shoes now!
The UWO study was co-sponsored by AirCast, and God bless them for sponsoring a very important study!
But the transition from boot to shoes is a scary juncture, and a hinged boot seems the best option to this "expert"!!
