As mentioned previously, the hamstring muscle group are the most commonly injured in soccer. The hamstrings comprise of three muscles – the Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus and Semimembranosus.

Anatomy of the Hamstring Muscle Group

Recurrence is a particular danger with hamstring injury. Like all muscle strains, hamstring strains heal with scar tissue and this tissue is never as extensible as the original muscle tissue. This means the hamstring is less extensible overall following a previous injury; and there is a particular risk of injury at the junction between the scar tissue and the normal muscle tissue. Having a previous hamstring injury means that the player has a greater chance of sustaining another hamstring injury because of this weakness in the tissue. If a player also has one or more of the other risk factors mentioned above, then the chances of re-injury increase.

Because recurrence risk is so high with hamstring muscle injuries, clubs may be liable to have a higher number if certain players suffer multiple hamstring strains. For example Tomas Rosicky and Freddie Ljungberg (Arsenal), Peter Ramage (Newcastle United), Marcus Bent, Soulemayne Diawara and Andy Reid (Charlton Athletic) suffered two hamstring injuries each, while Anton Ferdinand (West Ham United) and Celestine Babayaro (Newcastle United) had three hamstring strains.
