Total Reported Injuries per Club: 2006/07

The average number of reported 'significant' injuries to first team squad members, that kept the player out of action for at least two weeks, was 22. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur suffered the most injuries with 39 and 36 each. Neil Warnock may have blamed everything else, but he couldn't blame injuries for Sheffield United getting relegated as they had less than the average number of injuries.

Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Watford had the least number (sixteen) of first team players out for more than two weeks. These clubs have small squads and don't have the luxury of squad rotation or time to get players 100% fit. However, despite the low injury levels, Watford still got relegated.

Of course those teams who play more matches in the FA Cup and Champions League are likely to pick up more injuries. Champions League finalists Liverpool had less than the average number of injuries.

Chelsea and Manchester United also ‘went the distance' in most competitions, although The Blues were more affected by injuries over the course of the season. United's 19 injuries compared to Chelsea's 23 injuries may have made all the difference. Crucially, John Terry was sidelined for seven weeks with back surgery, during which time Chelsea dropped nine crucial points.
