By examining muscle injuries we are able to see to what extent each team was actually affected by an injury that has an equal chance of affecting all of the teams. As mentioned earlier, risk factors for muscular injury are divided into intrinsic (within the body) and extrinsic (those outside the body) variables. Intrinsic risk factors for muscle injury include previous muscle injury, muscle flexibility imbalances, muscle strength imbalances, fatigue, inadequate postural stability and alignment, inadequate nutrition and dehydration. Extrinsic risk factors for muscle injury include the level of competition in relation to the player's skill level, the playing surface, climatic conditions, training methods and an unrealistic playing schedule.
Newcastle United had the highest number of days lost due to muscle injuries – 973. This is no surprise as there are several players within the Newcastle United squad who have a history of previous muscle injury over previous seasons. A history of previous injury is the single biggest risk factor for the development of another muscle injury and this is demonstrated below.
