The average number of reported 'significant' injuries to first team squad members, that kept the player out of action for at least two weeks, was 23. Birmingham City (36), Newcastle United (35) and Sunderland (33) suffered the most injuries. Birmingham and Sunderland's high injury count certainly appeared to have an adverse effect on team performance, with both teams relegated from the Premiership.
Chelsea and West Ham United had the least number (twelve) of first team players out for more than two weeks. There certainly seemed to be a relationship between a low injury count and on field success. Chelsea of course finished as Premiership Champions for a second successive year and Alan Pardew's Hammers managed a top half league placing and were minutes away from winning the FA Cup.
Logically, teams who play more matches in the FA Cup and Champions League are likely to pick up more injuries, but FA Cup winners Liverpool had less than the average number of injuries, despite their involvement in the FIFA World Club Championship.
Champions League finalists Arsenal had a higher than average number of injuries after playing 59 competitive matches. This contrasted with Tottenham Hotspur who suffered less than average injuries after playing a total of 40 competitive matches during the 2005 / 2006 season.
