Perhaps the most hard hitting aspect of this report is how much Premiership clubs spend on what is effectively 'sick pay' for their playing staff. A total of 20,627 days were lost by Premiership clubs and players during the 2004/2005 season to injury.
Using the salary assumptions provided in Deloitte's Football Finance report from June 2005, which calculate that the average Premiership player costs his club around £0.9m a year (or £17,000 a week) we can show that £50,861,025 was spent in total by clubs on injured players.
