The term 'down to the bare bones' was popularised by Harry Redknapp during his days as West Ham United manager. Harry's experience of being severely limited by injury taught him that a big squad is required in the EPL. Quantity seemed more important than quality as Redknapp bolstered his newly promoted squad with a staggering 18 new faces during 2003/2004.
This policy was proved to be the right one as Portsmouth suffered more injuries (30) to their senior squad than any other team, but still managed to avoid relegation. Indeed after getting off to a good start the injuries that Redknapp knew were inevitable meant the team went through a very poor run of results. However head physiotherapist Gary Saddler was able to get key players back in the game and Pompey powered to the end of the season as one of the EPL's form teams.
The average number of injuries per team during season 2003 / 2004 was 17.3. It's interesting to note that all three relegated clubs – Leeds United (16), Leicester City (18) and Wolves (11) were not grossly over the average figure, suggesting factors other than injury were more responsible for their final league position.
