The Relevance of Injury Records for Fantasy League Picks

1. Introduction
2. Players suffering severe injuries
3. Players suffering less severe injuries

Unlike the previous list, where players tended to suffer an injury such as a broken leg or cruciate ligament rupture, the following players missed more than 100 cumulative days due to more than one 'less severe' injury.

Player Club Condition Duration (days)
Kevin Lisbie Charlton Athletic knee back/ankle/knee/back 220
Juan Veron Chelsea thigh/back 214
Jonathan Woodgate Newcastle United knee thigh/double hernia/hamstring 196
Neil McCann Southampton knee/thigh/ankle 184
Lorenzo Amoruso Blackburn Rovers calf/hamstring/knee 169
Gary Rowett Charlton Athletic knee/knee/knee 167
Craig Bellamy Newcastle United knee/knee/hamstring/hamstring 158
Chris Kirkland Liverpool wrist/groin/finger 144
Philippe Senderos Arsenal back/foot 144
Graeme Le Saux Southampton hamstring/hamstring/ankle 136
Damien Duff Chelsea shoulder/Achilles/shoulder 136
Scott Gemmill Everton thigh/thigh/knee 121
Michael Owen Liverpool thigh/ankle/shin 112
Kleberson Manchester United shoulder/knee 102

In the 346 significant injuries (those keeping a player out for over 14 days) reviewed, the average duration of injury was 49.5 days. On average, this would mean each significant injury costs the clubs £84,000 (~$154,500) in 'lost salaries' and a significant loss of points for the fantasy manager.

Of the more unlucky players in the list above, Woodgate and Bellamy (Newcastle), Duff (Chelsea) and Kleberson (Manchester United) may offer good value for the fantasy manager provided their injury limited points total for last season is reflected in their transfer value.
