Pool exercise, otherwise known as hydrotherapy, is an effective form of rehabilitation used by physiotherapists and physical therapists in the treatment of injuries and medical conditions. The exercises take place in a swimming pool, where the buoyancy provided by the water allows non-impact training to take place. A buoyancy belt such as the Classic Aquajogger may be used to aid buoyancy.
One advantage of exercise in water is that muscles are relaxed by the therapeutic heat, which helps to improve joint range of motion. Another advantage of hydrotherapy is that there is no weight transmitted through the body, which makes it an ideal form of exercise for fracture rehabilitation, knee injury rehabilitation and back injury rehabilitation.
